I have just come back from a pretty traumatic holiday where I was assaulted and ended up breaking my orbital bone and 2 other places around there. Below is where I have been fractured: I've had titanium plates & screws in the orbital bone and the fracture at the top. As the hospital was foreign I did find some translation hard! I'm going to my local walk-in centre (hospital) tomorrow to get my stitches removed (under the eye, just below the eyebrow and in the hairline). I'm not really in any pain but my eyes are MUCH more blurry than usual. They're both blood shot (with my damaged side worse). I've been using eyedrops they gave me (I think 1 is sterile water to clean the eye and the other stings - think it's an anti-biotic). I've also got loads of other pills like anti-inflammatories etc. Both pupils are also very dilated - the drops??? Just the clarify; it's normal for you to have distorted/blurred vision when going through a stress fracture? I'll be asking the local nurse tomorrow but I just want clarification. Also, to note, after the op on Monday I reacted really badly to some sort of gel she used to protect my eyes from drying out - ended up getting some kind of abcess in my cornea and it was absolutely horrible - I couldn't open my eyes for a day. I feel better now, just dizzy, more DP/DR than usual and my eyes blurring out all the time. I'm going to also ask the nurse how long I should stay off work for. Thanks a lot in advance - as you can imagine, I'm hyper sensitive to my vision as it is without all this BS.

Regular Visitor Posts: 652 03/22/08 4:43 AM	hay poor you!! go on holiday and end up in this way is terrible. my dad is recovering from two fractures to his skull. he can't remember how he did it. this was five weeks ago, he's still getting mild headaches and dizzy / lightheadedness and a funny taste in his mouth?????. he did have a blood clot though (due to the fall) but we don't know if its gone or not yet. he has not mentioned any problems with his eyes but his fractures are at the back of his head and the side. I really hope you recover quickly and you get better care here than my dad has had... take care gem x

Registered User Posts: 5010 03/22/08 8:20 AM	Dear YoungMale, I feel sorry for you, this is something one certainly doesn't need... Did you get the fractures in the course of the assault? When was the fracture and the assault (date)? Blurry vision is not a normal symptom encountered with such a fracture. After the fracture you have experienced a worsening of vision problems and also a worsening of derealisation, i.e. several persistent symptoms have worsened. This can be explained by the mechanism that physical stress can result in a worsening of intensity of persistent aura symptoms (see http://www.migraine-aura.org/content/e27891/e27265/e42285/e52203/e55955/index_en.html ). If the worsening lasts longer than 7 days, this has to be consideredm by definition, as another episode of the persistent aura (and stress can trigger an episode of persistent aura). So I would believe the link is between the stress and the triggering or worsening of persistent aura. This is depicted in the diagram you find at the above link. Was it only physical stress or did you also experience psychological stress, as would be expected with an assault? Do you have any symptoms of the psychological traumatization?

Regular Visitor Posts: 465 03/22/08 11:16 AM	Remove this ad I've put the stitches removal off until Mon/Tues as eye was really swollen when I awoke this morning. Thanks for the kind words guys. I was punched in the face a few times! I can't remember much of it as I was incredibly intoxicated, but I was assaulted for no reason other than a small argument. I just feel really down about it at the moment - mainly my vision as it's really blurry - I'm sure this is a side affect of the surgery as I have to keep putting in 2 different types of eye drops and my pupil is really big. I'm going to hopefully take all next week off work to rest and go to the doctors etc. Hopefully be fine once all the swelling has gone down. I just feel like quasimodo at the moment lol. It's hard and scary enough being sick or injured, but away in another place where you don't speak the language must have been even harder. How long do they expect before the fractures are healed? Are you on restricted activities? Who was the jerk who hit you, and did you get a hit back?

Regular Visitor Posts: 465 03/22/08 1:43 PM	Nah didn't get a hit back - was in no fit state to defend myself, let alone attack someone back. I know who he is though and he will be dealt with. The internet is a great tool for tracking down people. Not sure how long until they're fully healed but I'm on meds for 5-7 days and then I'm not allowed physical activity for 4 weeks and then no contact sports for 6-8 weeks. Which kinda sucks as I'll get fat lol. It's very worrying how quickly you lose strength and any muscle definition laying on your back for just over a week not doing anything. I feel really weak and tired at the moment. I just hope my eyes just go back to at least how they were pre-injury. Thanks for your concerns. I'm sure I'll be okay. People have been through much worse.

The blurri vision is still there after 10 days - would you say it's a new visual symptom or a worsening of a pre- 12 March 2008-existing blurry vision? Is the derealisation feeling also still worsened after 10 days?

My eye is not fully opened and the pupil is a different size to my right eye + the whites of my eye are red + yellow. The DR is probably worse due to the fact I've been cooped up indoors and not really been able to go out and 'enjoy myself'. I guess like with anything, if you're limited to your daily routine and you're sitting inside all day you will go 'mad' which is what I put it down too. The DP/DR is definitely a sideaffect of my visual deterioration, I've no doubt about that 1 iota.

Registered User Posts: 5010 03/25/08 9:31 AM	Remove this ad Hello YoungMale, if one analyses the course of persistent aura, one can distinguish (1) the usual daily fluctuations that may occur, with a general level of intensity as average; (2) a transitory worsening (by definition lasting shorter 7 days) that may be produced by several factors e.g. stress; and (3) a worsening of pre-existing persistent symptoms (or occurrence of new ones) lasting, by definition, longer than 7 days, which may be triggered by the same factors as (2). So what has happened is that the stress from the assault and the head fracture has triggered a new episode of the PMA with a worsening of both persistent VS and DP/DR. This can, of course, show full recovery (i.e. going back to pre-worsening level or beyond). In the ca. 500 respondents to the survey there is one further where a closed head injury has triggered an episode of PMA. Would you say the assault and head injury represented a physical stress only, or did it also imply psychological stress?
