variation on a scotoma?

But lately they've been in the central part of my vision, so I've been paying a little more attention. Yesterday I was having bigger grained, blacker, flashier snow and I get an oval-shaped patch of completely clear, snow-free vision. It lasted a few hours, ended up as more of a circle. If I closed my eyes, that same patch was a cloudy grey. Anyone get anything like that? I'm just curious. Need to cheer yourself up? Watch the Kitty Cat Dance!

Registered User Posts: 5010 01/20/08 2:56 PM	Dear SopuliSusie, that's an interesting observation. With open eyes, could you see the environment normally in the oval-shaped snow-free area of vision? That the patch persisted after eye closure and then appered as a cloudy grey would be an argument for its being a scotoma, but if it were a scotoma one would not understand that you had normal vision of the environment in the area of the 'scotoma' (which you didn't stae, that's why I asked). If the area of the scotoma were snow-free, that would also be unusual, because often the area of a scotoma is filled by more hallucinatory patterns. The only parallel would be the observation of ohCRICKETS who reported a transitory worsening of his vs following a transitory migraine aura. I will place your report together with ohCRICKET's, could you make an image of (1) the snow-free spared area with open eyes and (2) its appearance with eyes closed. Greetings, K

Posts: 1496 01/20/08 4:44 PM Administrator	Yeah, I thought it was odd- sort of like the opposite of a normal scotoma. That's why I wanted to ask about it. So my vision within the oval patch was perfectly normal, everything outside of the patch was snowy. I'll try and get a couple of pictures together. On another scotoma note, I had a super cool one last week that was like a scintillating black hole sucking in everything around it. It had the same pattern with the eyes closed, except that was all black on grey. That one was fun to watch. I'm not sure why I'm getting so many odd visuals lately, but I've been having greater migraine activity in general (a few actual headaches a week... actually its all probably the same headache, who knows). Need to cheer yourself up? Watch the Kitty Cat Dance!

Regular Visitor Posts: 652 01/20/08 5:32 PM	i've been meaning to post about a strange new symptom of mine and this seems to be slightly related to yours... i have woken up twice in the last couple of weeks in the middle of the night to find a big blob of black/red in the middle of my vision. if i blink i still see it and it is in both my eyes .. it probably lasts about 10 seconds then disappears? it is quite thick in colour and i can't see through it very much. it has scared me a little as it is very new to me. i have never had a scotoma. is that what this could be?

Do you remember whether you had a dream before the awakening? How long did the intense black/red blob last during these nights? When did you first notice that you see it also during the day, after blinking? Was that some time after the first night you saw it? or after the second night? Can you make an image of its appearance during these nights, and during the day, after the blinking?

I wake up just about every night with a dark blob in the center of my vision. I just tell myself its from watching TV before falling asleep, because that seems to be a reasonable explanation. Registered User Posts: 73 01/21/08 1:55 PM	My scotomas look just like that simulation you posted, klaus, except they are not completely central and they are monocular. I am trying to think of a possible reason that I have gone from expericing one or two of them a year, to one of two every other week. I one in each eye (not symmetrical) for the first time last week. one is still really obvious when i blink. i am about to turn - do you think it could be in any way connected with my hormone levels? just a thought

I don't recall having a dream before wakening. i haven't seen it in the day just those two nights which were about a week apart, when i said i still see it, i meant during the 10 seconds not meaning still as in now.. ohcrickets thanks for your comment, it is soo comforting to know others experience these things too. Yeah i had watched tv in bed on both those nights so maybe it is that.
