I understand your question about palinopsia triggering aura. I get that, and I've learned to avoid looking at windows or indirectly at light sources when I feel at risk for the aura. But sometimes the afterimage burn will trigger the arc of the aura anyway.

Both according to the diagnostic criteria of the International Classification of Headache Disorders (2nd ed) of the International Headache Society (see http://www.migraine-aura.org/content/e25968/e26078/e26305/index_en.html ) and according to the diagnostic criteria used in the Sofia Greene study (see http://www.migraine-aura.org/content/e27891/e27265/e42285/e42291/index_en.html ) your history fulfills the criteria of persistent aura without infarction, a complication of migraine with aura. In your case, the persistent aura was triggered by the physical stress from the Zoloft discontinuation syndrome (so, as you have felt, Zoloft played an essential role in the pathogenesis, but not as the cause, but as a trigger). Rather than benzodiazepines (which have the risk of addiction) I would recommend that one should try one of the medications from the antiepileptic drug type that have been reported to be of help in some sufferers from persistent aura, e.g. valproid acid or lamotrigene (see http://www.migraine-aura.org/content/e27891/e27265/e42285/e42287/index_en.html ). If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to ask. I have 3 further questions: The two nocturnal attacks with trails in 1999, do you remember whether you have already slept and have noted the trails after awakening from sleep. Same question for the nocturnal onset of the palinopsia (afterimages, trails) in May 2004, when you went from the dark bedroom into the illuminated bathroom. Did you sleep already and did the symptoms occur after awakening in the night? Can you make an illustration of your increased afterimages, of the trails, and of the ocular migraines.
I will answer these questions and try to give you an image as well.
