Regular Visitor Posts: 413 03/29/08 4:32 PM	Wow, I really never understood what people meant by depersonalization so I assumed I didn't have/get it. I watched the trailer and saw something of myself in the main character. So, yes, I get sparodic bouts of depersonalization - it gets better and worse at times, though usually I do not suffer from it. Also, I believe that when I first was blessed with VS, I was what I've called emotionally numb. There were elements of depersonalization to this numbness. If I recall, it lasted a few weeks. It may have been two weeks. It seems that a situation where there is a lot of visual or audible stimulation will trigger this depersonalization. I've been assuming it was a psychological response, perhaps anxiety, but now I'm wondering if it is a VS response as I hadn't had this response before aquiring VS, that I can recall... Posts: 1496 03/29/08 10:29 PM Administrator	I had episodes of DP/DR before the VS started, which were related sometime to either migraine aura and sometimes panic attacks. But I think with VS, the perceptual change can cause a sort of mis-match that induces DP/DR. I can tell you that mine has become more endurable with time. It was certainly worse in the beginning- especially the depersonalization. I am still more emotionally detached from everything than I used to be before the VS, and I feel like I'm observing everything, including myself from a distance. I think that being a scientist makes this a more comfortable to deal with- I'm just in that role of detached observer 24/7 rather than only in the lab. The derealization is constant, but I'm used to it, and I think the biggest helper is my deep down understanding that everything is real, and I'm in it, it just doesn't seem that way. Even though I FEEL like I could put my hand through the table and that it is fake, I KNOW I can put my glass down and my glass and the table are there. That came with time. The movie looks neat- I'm definitely going to have to see it! Need to cheer yourself up? Watch the Kitty Cat Dance!

Regular Visitor Posts: 1008 03/30/08 4:16 AM	oh wow I really appreciate movies that cover this stuff, it is important because it means other people may begin to understand how others feel, or that they themselves (if they experience DP) are not as odd as they think they are. The more I experience DP/ DR the more I personally look at myself as a spirit in a material world/ body.......

I look around at the people around me and it is very much like the scenes in the movie - surreal - detached - dream-like. I've been assuming it was an anxiety response or some weird efect of the topamax. Sometimes I feel like my hands aren't mine. (Like right now.) Sure they work and I can feel them, but they are kind of weird to look at while they're typing, like they're someone elses hands. Again, I figured it was the Topamax messing with my head. I think noise brings on DP for me but I'm not too sure. I wonder if what I call 'fog brain' is actually a form or level of DP? I'll have to keep an eye on that. Cheers Jim

Not so neat to live through, but you know. What you're describing is basically what happens to me also. I think what you mean by shifting 1/2 dimension out of place is like what I think of as being surrounded by a bubble full of some think substance that is separating me from everything else... like all the sound takes a split second longer to get to me... weird, weird stuff. That trailer was interesting...maybe Hollywood will start making more pictures based on real people's problems! Michelle

I've often wondered whether I'm dead yet just don't know it. That trailer hit a raw nerve with me. I totally understand what that guy is going through. It's a shame he's just an actor, but would be interesting to know if the character also experiances VS.

But it seems that you can clearly experience both separately since some of you have VS without DP/DR and DP/DR by itself is quite common, atleast from what I've read.. There is a good forum for DP/DR here: http://www.dpselfhelp.com/forum/ I don't know about the actor in the movie, but I think that the director (or perhaps it was the writer) suffered from DP/DR, so he or she clearly had a personal motivation for making this film. I also just bought a book on the subject ("Feeling Unreal"), I haven't started reading it yet but it seems fascinating..

Registered User Posts: 7 03/31/08 6:49 PM	I've been waiting on this movie for a while. It premiered at some film festival, then seemed to have disappeared from the face of the earth. Now, I hear it's being released on DVD in May of this year. Happy times! Edit: Here we go, this is it at Amazon. They say the release date is May 13th, 2008. While I've seen lots of cross-over between VS and DP, they still seem to be very separate conditions. I've seen snow for as long as I can remember. I can vaguely remember looking at the "snow" while playing in the snow at the age of two. I've never had reason to believe it was out of the ordinary until I was told otherwise. While I felt similar about my depersonalization-like symptoms, I always had a gut feeling something wasn't right there. I can also pinpoint their beginnings several years later into my childhood. I've got Feeling Unreal somewhere around here. It's not a bad book, though far more detailed than I could handle. If you're curious, it's not cheap, being a hardback, but it's very thorough and more up to date than many resources. Some people who feel they have depersonalization talk about "seeing the air", which seems to sync well with the descriptions of visual snow. Both tend to get the medical cold shoulder for being what some consider to be inaccurate, out of date, or non-existent in most primary medical resources. I experience (not so much "suffer from", aside from an unstable mood and occasional anxiety) what seems to be both as a day to day matter. I don't really consider the snow a factor in my depersonalization-symptoms. I have other visual cues that only show when those seem to flare excessively, such as a foggy, white haze that can be seen in certain conditions that it otherwise wouldn't. Regular Visitor Posts: 465 04/01/08 6:41 AM	To summarise my DP/DR is quite difficult. It's quite a few things which attribute to my DP/DR. DP.... basically having a constant mind fog in my head and questioning reality all the time gives me the feelings of DP. I find it hard thinking for myself at times and I can act VERY irrationally. My emotions are all over the place and I get sick thoughts which don't even make me think twice. I could quite easily kill a stranger or something and not be bothered. I wouldn't because I know right from wrong but I would feel no remorse about it because my life doesn't feel real. I often think that the majority (if not all) of those convicted for crimes such as serial rape and serial murder have some form of DP/DR (saying that, DP/DR is quite a broad name that probably covers a lot of mental illness). DR... with the VS constantly glazed over my vision and with my visual perception and interpretation of the world around me it just feels fake/not real. I get up in the morning and the first thing I do is take a look around to see if I feel any better and always get 'down' because I don't. I just feel like there's a thick pane of glass between myself and the 'real world' - I can vaguely remember what that world feels like.... as a result I can't get close to people. It's why when I have been in a relationship I'm quite a 'physical' person because I found the physical touch to be important to me and feeling that little more 'real'. I hate being single because you feel so alone. I have driven a lot of friends away due to not really caring. I never feel in complete control of my senses and as a result things like judgement and decisions are poorly made. Some things do relieve the symptoms... alcohol and high levels of caffeine/energy drinks. They perk me up and make me feel more confident and in control of my senses and in control of myself. Sorry, don't mean to drag on but it's fucking hard to actually describe what's going on inside me as I'm not entirely sure myself. Also as a result my anxiety is bloody terrible at times because I feel so alien. I feel like because I concentrate and spend so much of my time thinking about reality, the VS, feeling detached etc I know very little about what's going on in the world. How I hold down a job god only knows! So I feel stupid at times and my memory also takes a back seat a lot and recollecting even the most recent of events can become a struggle. I think someone replaced my brain with some sort of aggregate.

Registered User Posts: 7 04/03/08 5:46 PM	Remove this ad I finally got to see a screening release of the movie (the legality of which I have to question, but I have my copy already pre-ordered, so I'm not going to think about it too hard), and I enjoyed it. I'm not a huge fan of the romantic-comedy genre, but that means I don't watch a lot of them, and the few I do see don't get me feeling I'm watching the same old love story over again. I'm glad I didn't get to see it when I first heard about it. The concept of depersonalization had only just been brought to my attention, and I was researching it obsessively. I think, at that time, I would've tried way too hard to relate to the character's symptoms, to the point of not actually enjoying the movie itself. I laughed at some of the similar experiences and habits, but I was able to enjoy him as his own, well done character, and not say "hey, that's me". I think all of the characters were great, actually, and the overall presentation wasn't bad. I enjoyed it, and I'll probably show it to some friends. And if my one friend who knows can keep her mouth shut, I won't even exclaim "yeah, I have that too." It wasn't an amazing movie, but it was fun.
