I think the idea of stress and trauma is important in this, but not from some angle that it's psychosomatic. I do not believe vs is psychosomatic and I believe I am qualified to call that one, even from inside the condition and especially speaking from inside the condition. I've treated perhaps hundreds of cases of PTSD and visual snow has never been reported to me as a symptom or complaint, and people have time and opportunity in my setting to do that. I am suspicious, however, about the role of the adrenal gland/endocrine issues in the development of vs. When I was very sick, I was suspicious about the HPA axis and that it was off. While I did not believe I had the severity of pheochromocytoma, I felt that some of my symptoms paralleled the condition. When I was deep into the second attack some blood had been drawn, and I knew that if such a condition was going to be identified it would need to be when I was in an attack. I remember asking two doctors who were following me (we were all three in the room) if they would use that blood for that rule-out/catecholamines (it could be kept 48 hours at the lab), and they said no. It was hard for me to forgive them because I knew that if that opportunity was missed, I'd have to descend into that state again and I didn't know if my body could physically take it. Was that stuff traumatic? Yeah, sort of. Do I have PTSD? No. But I still wonder about high levels of stress and the possible long term effects that might have on the nervous system in people at risk. I also still wonder about sleep deprivation and it's possible role as a precursor when added to stress for the onset of vs.
