Registered User Posts: 41 01/21/08 3:46 AM	Remove this ad Had anyone had this? Its when you wake up and are unable to move for a while, its is really scary. Also, when some people have it they see strange things, because they're half asleep. Could this be associated with vs, has anyone here experienced it?

Regular Visitor Posts: 187 01/21/08 7:06 AM	I have sleep paralysis some times, three times in a month at max. I also have alot of lucid dreams, nights where i don't dream are rare, somehow. My biggest issue is that when i wake up i feel to say "CRAP", light burns in my eye's, visual snow is 50% more visible, a big white haze infront of my eye's, rather dry eye's too, luckely it lasts only 5-10 minutes after i wake up.

I don't get any hallucinations but when i got caught in a paralysis i get an amazingly loud ringing noise that starts off normal then gets louder and louder until i snap out of the paralysis. I wasn't concerned about the paralysis at first because it rarely happened but when i first experienced the ringing it frightened me because it was so loud and high pitched that it felt like my head might explode. I reckon i experienced sleep paralysis 2-3 years ago but it has become more frequent overtime, but not enough for it to be a problem. My sister also gets it (without the ringing). In fact i recall her telling me about it before it finally happened to me.

Posts: 1496 01/21/08 11:59 AM Administrator	I get the paralysis and the hallucinations. Super vivid dreams and lucid dreams also. I can have a vivid dream during a 20 minute nap. It pre-dates my VS by many, many years. They tested me for narcolepsy twice. Apparently narcoleptics do all of that stuff. But so do normal people. All of that happens to me much more frequently when I am stressed out, anxious, and not getting enough quality sleep. If its happening all the time and totally freaking you out, there are drugs they can put you on for it. At least that's what the sleep neurologist told me. Personally, my hallucinations have morphed into things which do not freak me out, as opposed to the dead people, monsters, demons and other such crap I used to see. You might want to make sure you're not getting scary visuals before you go to bed (horror movies, zombies on video games, etc). Need to cheer yourself up? Watch the Kitty Cat Dance!

Registered User Posts: 7 01/22/08 2:58 AM	I don't get sleep paralysis normally. The only times I got it was when I was on Strattera (Atomoxetine). A few months after I started taking it I would get lots of sleep paralysis. I would especially get it if i was napping a little. It was very severe and scary. In addition to that I was very lightheaded all throughout the day and had mild hallucinations (pretty much I would see out of the edge of my vision that the task bar in Windows would be flashing to notify me of a new IM). The sleep paralysis went away a few weeks after stopping that medication, and the other side effects slowly wore off over a month or two. All of this on only 40mg. My friend is on 100mg and doesn't get any side effects... Go figure. Everybody reacts differently to medications. Oh and by the way, I went off this med a month before my visual snow and visual things happened. I guess it's possible this caused my VS, though I was also taking Trazodone for sleep, which is an antidepressant. migraineaura.org lists some peoples visual snow caused by them. I may never know.

Regular Visitor Posts: 1008 01/22/08 12:27 PM	I sometimes get sleep paralysis.....thankfully not too often because it is truly horrible. I get all sorts of weird things in my sleep. I have lucid dreams if I am too hot, or have been drinking too much alcohol. It is worse when stress is involved or emotional distress. I have hallucinations on waking too but I have mentioned them all before. Both visual and auditory hallucinations. I have been told by a psychiatric nurse that they are quite common....but then thinking about the kinds of people he mixes with, he probably would say that. He said I was normal by the way!!!!! Hmmmmm

Regular Visitor Posts: 413 01/22/08 12:34 PM	I've only had this once - and only since VS (among other problems) started. I took a nap, woke up and could not move for around 2-3 minutes. Eventually I was able force my arms and legs to move - they felt like I had a lead suit on.

I also get very very vivid dreams...every night. Not one night goes by where I dont remember my dreams.

In the religious culture I was raised in, demons were literally around every corner, waiting to possess any good Christian. It totally sucked to have sleep paralysis and waking up to see dark shadows and figures in the room, or hallucinating something hovering above me. I think I went days without sleeping because I was so paranoid and terrified. I would pray myself to sleep. Then I learned what was happening and my night time existence definitely got easier. Having sleep paralysis so much when I was younger, I think it has fed into a particular fear of mine of being attacked but being unable to scream or move. Now I've had it happen so many, many times that it doesn't bother me at all. I have woken up with sleep paralysis convinced I was levitating over my bed. That's always a weird feeling. Now I only get it when I'm particularly anxious. Need to cheer yourself up? Watch the Kitty Cat Dance!
