"feeling weird"(7)- i always get up in the morning in fear of caughing cause this is what triggers me feeling weird. i always feel drained and i notice like everything around me. tinnitus(- i usually hear this when i am sitting in the silence, but it's rather comforting. makes me feel like someone lives in my ear lol. Migrane/temp blindness, i call it a "static attack" (9)- my coughing fits trigger this, and i don't know why. i cough too hard, then my eyes start to feel pressurised, like there going to pop out of my head. then i get this splitting migrane and can't see for like 5 miniutes. i have to literally go out of my way to sit somewhere for about 5 miniutes. i start sweating alot and feel overheated. i often drink alot of water after this. I am new to the board but not the condition (27 years). Sir, you need to seek medical help as soon as possible. Your symptoms are closer to possible stroke and heart problems than the effects of migraines, although they could still be migraines. (following is my list -- had to point this one out first!)

Registered User Posts: 6 12/28/07 6:17 AM	I have identical symptoms of the original poster, except the feeling of "weirdness" is hard to pin down. I'm an extremely left-brained female and before pregnancy complications had genius IQ. Snow: 5 (average, gets worse with PMS and migraines); less noticible in bright sunlight and if I look directly into a diamond or moissanite I can't see snow Negative after-images: 7 (causes even more troubles with reading black on white than the snow) Floaters: just a couple of dark spots Tinnitus: always in a quiet environment -- I think I've had this since a severe ear infection as a young child where I had "marching" in my ears for a week. Confusion, tingling, numbness, flashing auras and blockage of vision are all temporary symptoms of migraines for me. Only the snow remains becoming worse after a flashing star patterned aura expands from a pinpoint expanding across the vision and then dissapating leaving worse snow behind. I also have neck issues, which become worse with tension and sinus congestion, possibly a trigger for the migraines. Mostly my migraines are monthly and hormone related. Other effects like temporary sparkles, etc. are normal, so won't go into them. Also, "night vision" snowiness is normal for everyone, just worse for us. Background: I can't remember having snow-less vision. The snow has always been worse after an aura migraine, and I've had those since age 10. This is good news for all... 27+ years of living with this, and I can't say that it is necessarily progressing. I can still pass eye tests and drive etc. The snow can be worse for up to a week, but gradually lessens so I am used to it again. Discovery! I was about 13 years old and mentioned to my best friend one rainy day in school that the "snow" was bad that day and making me tired. She said "What snow? What are you talking about?" Told mom, who always thought I was a hypochondriac but took me to opthamologist anyway. He suggested my genetic anemia could be starving out my color cells causing the B&W ones to turn on to compensate even in daylight. No special tinted lenses or anything made any difference, so on I went with life until 1997. In 1997, I decided to test out some of the wonders of the internet to find another soul with the same condition. I did! ONE 17 year old had the same issues and also suffered from migraines! I went to a neural opthamologist, had MRI, CT scan, EEG, all kinds of vision tests, etc. He said that the only thing that could be done was experimental drugs, which he did not recommend if I was planning on having more children. I checked up on him a few years later, and he'd quit neural opthamology and left the area. Conclusion: this is from being a migraine sufferer and from what I can tell is likely permanent if you've had SV for over a year, but no one has actually gone blind?, although there are some with extreme snow. The "triplet" lady... I feel so sorry for you! There is always hope... the last 10 years there's 2 cases on the internet to hundreds? Lots of research etc. Message: hang in there... humans can get used to anything... reading is a pain yes, but my eyes have adjusted to reading chunks of words at a time like a speed reader because of the snow. Registered User Posts: 3 01/12/08 10:02 AM	Visual snow (6 day) (8 night) - I have had VS as long as I can remember. During the day it is present as white, or translucent snow. It varies in degree, depending on stress/tiredness levels. Two and a half years ago I suffered an extreme VS event in which I had to stay off work for four weeks. I awoke one morning to find my VS had gone from barely noticible to extremely noticible. I became painfully sensitive to light. Everything seemed 'over-exposed.' I had to stop driving for this period as I couldn't read numberplates a couple of metres in front of me, not to mention the fact that reflections would wash out my entire visual field. I have constant visual snow at night when I close my eyes. It is worst in complete darkness as this shows up all of the various other 'effects,' such as floaters. Negative and Positive After-images (6) - Grid patterns, really mess me up as I see positive and negative auras around them and around most things. These are monochrome. This appears worse against plain backgrounds. Black text on white paper, or a white screen is hellish to look at. I have to turn down the brightness/contrast of my monitor so I'm looking at dark grey on light grey. Direct sunlight on a page is actually painful to look at. Floaters (2) - I don't get much in the way of floaters thankfully, I mainly see these at night. Shimmering (3) - I sometimes notice a shimmering circle - like a heat haze in the centre of my visual field. Seeing retinal white blood cells (3) - I can white blood cells moving through the retinal blood vessels when looking at a blue sky; sometimes when looking at bright monocoloured surfaces. Starbursts and halos around lights at night (3) - Can be quite easily dazzled by other cars headlights when driving at night. Persistent tinnitus (5) - Constant highpitched tones. Worse at night and in quiet environments. In addition to this permanent effect I get the low pitched, intermittent variety ocurring as a 'closing off' of sound in one ear and a low pitched bass hum. Worst case of this lasted three days. More frequently -in fact just now- I get a 'closing off' of sound in one ear and a whistling tone - lower in pitch but 'louder' than the permanent variety. Can last seconds/minutes. This variety is more common then the bass variety. Occasional balance upset (4) - Feels like the world tips sideways, then settles down. It's a sig Jim, but not as we know it.

Regular Visitor Posts: 413 01/17/08 3:06 PM	Visual snow (6) - Changes from day to day and from morning to afternoon - gets worse and better, I'd rate between 4 and 9. Often worse after sleep or nap. Sparkles are especially annoying when I get them... Increased Negative After-images (8 )- Very annoying Negative After Images. These drive me bonkers. Have been better lately, but when they flare up these are the worst. Increased Positive After-images (7 ) - Not as obvious as the Negative images - but still present. If I look at the white ring of a coffee cup then look away, the white ring remains in my vision for around 1/2 second before fading to a black negative. These also cause big problems when reading or using a computer. Floaters (1) - I've noticed floaters for years - they don't normally bother me. Starbursts and halos around lights (8 ) - much worse at night - also during the day for bright lights and high contrast situations. Feeling slightly fatigued and "weird" (4) - Feeling better now I'm on Anti-Depressents - still weird and fatigued. Persistent tinnitus (2) - doesn't bug me much. I can ignore it. Occasional vertigo - Between 3 and 9 - depending on episode. Worse case I kept walking into walls - felt completely drunk. Hemiparesis - Left side - ( 6 ) - persistany - usually much worse during Vertigo spells. Regular Visitor Posts: 232 02/08/08 11:40 AM	Visual snow (2)- the snow doesnt bother me much since ive been seeing for so long and notice it in such few places Starbursts/floaters (5)- they get very irritating when trying to talk to people Afterimages (- theres no where i can look without seeing any of those, especially when im at school. headaches(6-10) - i get these daily, verapamil helps but theyre starting to come back as bad as they used to be before i had medication. every morning i woke up with the feeling that i had been hit in the back of the head with a lead pipe. sometimes its like knives/icepicks/rods are piercing me in the back of the head and right between my eyebrows. i often feel like nails are stuck in my brows, much like eyebrow piercing but through the bones and right above my eye.

After-images- 5 (I wish this symptom didn't exist) Floaters- 5 (I hate the ones I see in the sky even more than the ones I see in the house) Persistent tinnitus- 2 (Some nights I dont notice it all, some rare nights it's hell.) Feeling slightly fatigued and "weird" - 2 (I get this only on nights where the tinnitus acts up) Shimmering-- 4 (Only whenever I'm tired I see a lot of shimmering in all my vision in both eyes. It drives me nuts! It's always acompained by a fuzzy spider-shape thing)

In confined rooms, its worse. sometimes it gets worse when the weather changes. I swear at times it changes colors and brightness. Had stuffy nose for 3 weeks and headaches before VS started but doctors tell me now that its unrelated. I believe it is "better" than it was a month ago. started after a night of drinking? After-images- 2 not so bad go away quickly seems normal Floaters- 3- only when i look upward toward ceiling or sky i see black haze not bothersome Persistent tinnitus- im not sure if this exists, i think not i would notice... Feeling slightly fatigued and "weird" - 8 ive been feeling disconnected for awhile now, long before VS, dizzy for years and whew always tired... Shimmering-- 4- happens randomly when i think about it more so only bothers me then Had three eye check ups, an MRI, blood test, urine test- nothing wrong. OK.... i have a lazy eye as well, only one good eye to begin with. Headaches have lessened, VS still exists. Doctor said headaches/migraines without pain wouldnt last a month??

Registered User Posts: 1 03/01/08 2:56 PM	Hi, new here. When I was a teenager I did considerable amounts of LSD (among other drugs) and got into lots of fights which led to lots of head injuries. I changed my ways, but at the age of 20 I started noticing I was getting visual snow. I'm 23 now, and the symptoms have gotten worse, but not enough that's it's anything more than a annoyance at this point. I only see it on bright back grounds. The worst is when I look at the sky, and it basically looks like tons of multi colored and transparent bugs are flying around in the sky. I don't get it at night however. When I cough really hard I get it really bad though. The amount of "snow" is a lot less, but they're a lot bigger and more colorful. I can see them on any back ground under those circumstances, but it only lasts for a few seconds to a minute.

Indoors, I get it when I'm looking at solid-color objects or when I haven't gotten enough sleep. It seems to be worse at night and will occur outdoors frequently -- it also seems to be largely restricted to my peripheral vision. After-images- 6 - I have frequent persistent negative after-images. Like the snow, they do not occur when outside or in natural light. Low-light and stress makes them worse. Last night I verified that they can occur outside at night. Floaters- 2 - I see floaters very irregularly, and I think they're mainly restricted to when I'm tired and I'm having trouble focusing my eyes. Persistent tinnitus- 1 - I will get ringing in my ears every 3 days or so, just for 10 seconds, I can't remember it being longer than that. I have damaged my ears in the past by going to loud concerts without earplugs, so I am somewhat used to this, although it occurs more regularly now. Feeling slightly fatigued and "weird" - 8 - I am nearly always fatigued and feel weird. Sometimes it's lightheadedness, sometimes it's just feeling slightly ill. I have had what is thought to be Post-Infection Irritable Bowel Syndrome and a host of other symptoms since a very bad illness last year. Shimmering- 0

Newbie Posts: 17 03/20/08 10:05 AM	Remove this ad Not been here for a while, as I've been trying to ignore my visual symptoms, but it's not easy:-) Background: I've had hydrocephalus since birth and visual snow and tinnitus as long as I can remember. I always thought the 2 were related (due to damage caused by raised intracranial pressure). Since finding this site, and a hydrocephalus forum, I'm not so sure... Visual snow - 5 (daytime) 9 (night / darkness) Tinnitus - 2 (usually drowned out by everyday noise, but exacerbated by various meds or illness) Afterimages - 2 (not bad enough to annoy) Floaters - 6 (had an increase last year, I find these quite annoying) Starbursts - around streetlights, headlights in the darkness Derealisation / flat 2D environment - had this for 30 years, started at age 12 after brain surgery for hydrocephalus. Thought I was going mad. Have learned to live with it and accept it as "normal".

Its so annoying I find myself thinking about them alot more than I should. See them only on bright surfaces and of course the blue sky. After images - these are not so bad. Not only that but they seem to fluctuate. Sometimes its bad and noticable. sometimes it ain't. Floaters - These aren't so bad. Least of my concerns. Visual Snow - Im not sure if I have this...

Registered User Posts: 1 04/07/08 10:33 AM	vs 1 only at night, never bothered me negative afterimage, 2 always since childhood, used as a form of entertainment Floaters,3 loads for as long as I can remember, I am very used to these and they do not bother me Seeing blood cells,1 also for as long as I can remember, worse against the sky, these do not bother me feeling fatigued and wierd, 10 all the time, I have always experienced head rushes and blacking out spells, but this has gotten worse over the years. to the point were my memory fails me, and I get hot and sweaty and nervouse and anxious. I always have a headache that increases and decreases. but the fog is always there( always a dull ache that wont go away). makes it extreamly difficult to care for my three kids and live life normally. I am beside myself. I seem better in the outdoors, but I can not go into stores at all, within 1o min. I am hot and sweaty and dizziness and vertigo, I have in the past woken up with double vision. Persistant Tinnitis. 10 all the time round the clock somtimes worser or better. drives me insane.

Regular Visitor Posts: 462 04/10/08 5:38 AM	hello all, time for me to join the bandwagon and list my symptoms. Mine started in late 2003. I was on holiday and after eating some seafood i went to bed. I then started having some breathing problems that lasted about 4-5 days and then dissapeared on its own 4-5 days after that i got up and felt weird in one eye, my eye muscled had gone weak. All my visiual symptons started after my eye muscle weakness which makes me believe that all our symptoms have to do with the nerves. But then again who am i to make that call. Anyway my problem started with floaters and VS. VS (3): in both eyes...much worst in darkness but not too noticable in daylight. Anyway over the years i have gotten good on ignoring these. Floaters (2): I can see a bunch of them when i squint, if i dont squint i only see one or two occasionally. Seeing the white blood cells (3): Yup... during the day if i stare in the sky they are everywhere. Even if i am sitting in a low frequency light such as a tube light i can see them on the wall and what not. Weird flickering: This is what has bothered me most during the years. I am so glad some people have mentiuoned this in their posts. Wheneevr i close my eyes and open them there is a flickering. I have even seen this when i just close my eyes. Very rarely though. Afterimages (3): This somehow warries from day to day..i dont understand how. On a good day its not too bad on a bad day..its just terrible. If i stare at something for sometime and move my eyes the image sticks for atleast 4-6 seconds. Also when i rub my eyes white coloured electric kind of thing engulfs the whole vision then gets back to "normal" in 2-3 seconds. This is another reaosn why i believe all our symptoms are related to the optical nerves. Anyway thats about it from me for now.

I see them all the time, when I close my eyes, or look at anything dark or solid. Or even if not dark or solid. It's like looking outside when it's lightly raining, only mine don't move, just flicker (but not together). They're harder to see over textured things, or if I focus really hard on something. I think my brain's mainly used to tuning it out. I have 20/20 vision otherwise, and see well in the dark (like a videocamera in low light). Size Distortion (1) Sometimes when I stare at something at night as I'm falling asleep. Weird spaced out fatigue feeling ( 0) Nope. Anxiety/Depression (1) I'm pretty normal. Floaters (0) None. Negative after images (3) Again, born with them, so only when looking in the dark from in the light it takes longer for my eyes to calm down. Trails (1) Don't see 'em. Seeing things slide around, move, flash in the corner of my eyes (0) Halos (2) at night, but again, thought it was normal. tinnitis (1) as I fall asleep I can if I pay attention. I actually like it when I put in earplugs and it's like white noise to me. I think were this fixed I'd think I had super vision.

Registered User Posts: 2 05/05/08 7:56 PM	Visual snow - (3) - It's not bad and I can ignore it. The only thing that really bugs me is I don't remember what solid color looks like. Bad at night but I have decent night vision. Floaters - (5) - I have a huge one in my left eye that irritates me. I have a bunch of smaller ones in my right eye that are more worrying, since they are recent and new ones appear every so often. White blood cells against blue sky - (1) - It's normal, so I can't say it's anything but a 1. White blood cells against other backgrounds - (7) - I see something like white blood cells against non-blue backgrounds. These are irritating and they're new. I am more worried about this than bugged by it, however. Starburst - (1) - I thought this was normal. It doesn't bother me and I chalk it up to my astigmatism. After images - (2) - These only bug me when they are obscuring something I'm trying to focus on. Ghosting - (1) - If I look at a mirror really close, things like my teeth will ghost. I think it's an optical problem with mirrors, rather than my eyes. I don't notice it anywhere else (I DO have astigmatism which causes similar ghosting and doubling, but that's different). Sparkles - (3) - Small, multicolored dots that appear and disappear. I don't like them, but they don't interfere with my vision. Scintillating Scotoma (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scintillating_scotoma) - (0 most of the time, 9 when I have it) - I've had a few of these in my life. First was when I was 14 and had spent nearly all day in front of the computer. It lasted about 30 minutes and I felt nauseous the whole time and had a mild headache. Took some Tylenol and lay down in the dark. It went away. I've had some since then, but they only last like 20 seconds. I take it as a sign I've been using my eyes too much. Feeling weird - (1?) - Not sure what this really is, but from the other responses, I doubt I have this. Anxiety - (5) - I get anxious. I have something similar to hypochondria. Both have interfered with my life. As of late, it's been better, though I still worry about my health an irrational amount. Tinnitus - (2-3) - It's there and I can hear it often, but it's quite quiet. It gets worse when I listen to loud noises. Doesn't interfere with sleep, since I have a hard time falling asleep anyway. But once I'm out, I'm down for 8-10 hours like normal. Neck pain - (4) - I see this mentioned. I sometimes get really bad neck pain (extremely painful sharp pinch when I turn my neck a certain way). I don't want to say this is related to anything else, though, since I do sit a lot without having my neck back. Even when I was a child I sat like this when playing with toys for hours on end. The neck pain always happens after I have sat for a long period of time leaning forward (like I am right now...) without proper neck support. It lasts for 2-5 days. Tylenol helps a bit. I should probably see a chiropractor because my posture is atrocious. For a better description of most of the above, see my response to the survey thread.

Registered User Posts: 60 05/06/08 10:54 AM	I have had palinopsia for 4 years now. It started the moment I stopped Zoloft. It has never gone away. I see trails and after images in my vision EVERY DAY. With all the research I've done over the past 4 years I've learned that SSRIs (Zoloft, Paxil, Lexapro, etc) can trigger Palinopsia. Apparently a chemical receptor in the brain 5HT2a gets inhibited (screwed up) and then causes difficulty in sending the eye a message after it "sees" something...quite similarly to someone using LCD; the same chemical is affected, therefore causing palinopsia. Some neurologists are keen to this, particularly Dr. Marc J Dinkin out of Boston, MA. He won't prescribe SSRIs because he knows they can lead to palinopsia. I now have ocular migraines that occurred out of nowhere. I will be doing nothing in particular then I will get this sparkly, zigzag line in my peripheral vision that leads to blind spots for about half an hour; then it just goes away. This has happened 6 times over the past 6 months. Had a CT scan of my brain and they found nothing. Also had full dilated eye exam at Wilmer Johns Hopkins (best ER in the world for eye emergency). Doc said my eye was perfectly healthy. Next step is MRI. It's getting ridiculous. No resolution and no one knows why I have palinopsia. I will always believe the Zoloft caused it.

Newbie Posts: 18 06/01/08 8:32 PM	i've only recently started noticing any of this (registered today), although it's hard for me to tell if i've experienced for a long period of time or if it's new. visual snow (3) - at most, it will make it harder to focus on things if i'm rapidly changing what i'm looking at. doesn't really impare my vision. it's just something i notice, but it can be annoying. notice it more in low light conditions. floaters (1) - they come and go... don't remember the last time i noticed one. feeling weird (5) - tired and spaced out i guess. try to start an activity (cleaning, working on videogame) and will stop shortly after and not really get anything done. sleepy sometimes but can't sleep. don't feel like doing anything. contributes to me being less productive. starburst (1) - minimal - may be confusing it with glare glare (2) - i think this is compounded by the VS. things of high contrast (LED lights, text) have odd effects - hard to describe. just makes it hard to see a clear edge. i can still read fine though and it doesn't hurt my night driving. anxiety (4) - i worry about my health a lot. other things, not as much. worrying about my health has caused me a lot of stress, one panic/anxiety attack (i think), and has worried my mother. contributes to me being less productive. tinnitus (0) - i don't hear anything neck pain (2) - not usually an issue. sore neck sometimes. years ago, i remember turning my neck and occasionally feeling something. was like a warm liquid gushing... wish i had gotten that checked out. no idea what that was. after images (0) - not detailed anyway. mine is more like looking at a light and having it temporarily burned in your vision. doesn't last long. doesn't really hurt my ability to see. ghosting (1) - noticed it most clearly when looking at a full moon. i don't think it's normally an issue for me. seeing white blood cells (1) - only notice it if i make a real effort to focus in on them (only works while looking at sky). just tiny white dots flying around. headaches (1) - i'm not a headache person. i get them very rarely, they barely bother me when i do have them, and they go away fairly quickly. Black looks like it's made out of purple and green dots. Floaters - I have LOADS, and big ones Seeing retinal white blood cells - Yes, the best time to see them is if it's been snowing but now it's a very bright day and both the ground and the sky look brilliant white. Starbursts - yep Trails - Yes, more pronounced in my peripheral vision. White things moving in front of a black background leave very clear trails. Fun if it's snowing at night and you're stood under a streetlight =) Monocular diplopia (ghosting) - If credits are rolling at the end of a film and it's white writing on a black background I can see another copy of the writing underneath the real one which is clear enough to read. Also if football is on TV (I don't watch it but if someone else is watching it) the white line that runs down the middle of the pitch seems to keep on running right off the bottom of the TV screen for about another 1/2 of the length you can see on the screen. "Exploding grey flower" - see this thread here (http://thosewithvisualsnow.yuku.com/topic/4151). Very noticable on bright sunny days. Seems worse if i'm tired or dehydrated. Size Distortion - sometimes everything looks tiny. I look at my hand and it looks really little and far away like I was looking at from a couple of meters away. White floaty light in my peripheral vision - A bit like the one you see on one side of your eye if you poke the other side of your eye. Except it does it for no reason and floats up the extreme of my peripheral vision very slowly. Smudge effects - When I've just woken up, for about an hour after, it's like someone is playing with photoshop's smudge tool right in the middle of my vision. Very noticable when looking at a PC monitor.

Floaters (3)- A few, but the least of my concerns. Seeing retinal white blood cells (9) - This was my first visual symptom, I can´t look at the sky like a "normal" person without feling frustrated. Feeling slightly fatigued and "weird" (7) - I´m not shure if it´s Depersonalization, but most of the time I feel like if I was dreaming and an "empty head" sensation. Persistent tinnitus (5) -For about 5/6 months this was my only symptom and I thought it was the worst thing that could happen to me...when the visuals came I totally changed my opinion and abandoned the idea that it was due to noise induced trauma. Autokinesia (2) There was a small period of time that it went completely away, then came back at a small level then before.

It is the condition that bothers me the most, because it is the one that caused me to find this website in the first place. I've had visual snow since I was quite young - as far back as I can remember, and I'm 20 today. The condition has not gotten progressively worse but fluctuates depending on stress and mood, and if I am thinking about it (which I always am when I come here! :P) Mine is also multicolored. Increased Negative After-images [3] Not bad at all in my case. I mean, I notice it, especially when I'm tired, but it isn't a major complaint and is very much something I've always had. It just doesn't get in the way like visual snow does. Positive After-images (palinopsia) [8] I actually don't mind this effect either, but it is more disturbing than normal after images. I can see afterimages of anything if I try hard enough, but I rarely try and usually do not care. Floaters (0) I don't have floaters, at least not normal ones as my mother described to me. Seeing retinal white blood cells (1) I only see these in bright sunlight and always thought it was normal. Starbursts and halos around lights at night [8] Uh.. wow. I get this badly. So intensity wise - it's at least an 8. But it doesn't bug me. I've had it forever. Feeling slightly fatigued and "weird" (10) Probably completely unrelated to the visual condition. I have hypothyroidism, and the medicine, while it works, just doesn't keep you at pace with :normal people". I guess the combination of VS and Hypothyroidism could REALLY make this bad, and it definitely is a problem for me. I always feel like I'm beat down. Persistent tinnitus (4) I don't hear it unless I'm in a silent room or thinking about it, and even then it's not bad. I sleep with a fan to help myself go to sleep - its less grinding on the ears than a constant "eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee" sound.
