I had originally had my first MEG (Magnetoencephalogram) in Sept 2006, but since the results were "abnormal" my neuro-ophthalmologist asked me to repeat the test in May 2007. She called me this afternoon to inform me of the final results.
She said that my brain showed obvious signs that sound makes a physical response in my visual cortex. In other words, I can see sounds. Also, it means that whatever is wrong with my brain and these horrible visual distortions is exacerbated by noise. This is similar to flipping the light switch in the house in order to start your car…it shouldn't happen. The technical term is synaesthesia, but most people with synaesthesia have it from birth and find it "cool" to smell words or taste colors. How it manifests itself in my brain is really abnormal and is adversely affecting my life.
My doctor asked me to ask you all if any of you experience the same phenomenon. When you hear loud noises, do your visual distortions get worse? Has anyone else had an abnormal MEG? She feels this is an area that would benefit from further study at the University research hospital where she works.
